We got up in time for breakfast and managed to get packed. We left on time on Sunday to head towards the last part of the trip. We went out of Florence and drove three hours towards Assisi. Near noon, we stopped at a place that demonstrated how they made plates and other ceramics which were hand painted. 15 minutes later, we could buy a whole bunch of different things from food to ceramics.
We had a lunch break and then continued to Assisi. The fields were a great view of Italy as we approached the St. Francis Basilica. Since it was Sunday, we didn't see a lot of friars, but did get to see a couple. Some of our party was not allowed to go in because their shorts were too short. It started to rain as we entered in and saw the remains of St. Francis, as well as his church.
Afterwards, we shopped for an hour at the little tourist boutiques until the bus picked us up to take us towards Rome. The hotel we stayed at, Hotel Villa Aricia, is a small distance outside Rome. I asked Gigi why our hotel had been changed to this one and he replied that he thought either it was difficult to find places in Rome or the prices were going up. I remember that it was difficult for tour buses to get around in Rome when I was here four years ago.
We settled in our room and had dinner at 8:00. It was pasta for the first course, and then salad and turkey. It was a nice place to eat, well decorated and roomy. The kids were wound from being on the bus all day. Still, we had early bed check because we start tomorrow with a 5:45 wake up call. We are going to try to see as much of Rome as possible tomorrow. To their credit, the kids did quiet down and go to bed.
